In the meantime, continue to spread the word about the countywide curbside recycling petition. We need approximately 15,000 more signatures to bring it to a countywide election, at which point citizens will decide if curbside recycling should be available.

The majority of the country has instituted curbside recycling, alongside regular trash pick-up. 9,000 other communities have figured out a way to make it cost effective for both the government and the citizen. It is an environmental best practice and a relatively easy policy to implement, a no-brainer some would say, if a county were trying to become the “greenest in the state.” Or was that just pre-election year promises?

In our new poll, we ask the question: Can Chatham really be the “greenest county in Georgia” without curbside recycling?

Consider the recent comments on recycling and its greater environmental impacts by the director of Keep America Beautiful, “Recycling is an effective and easy way for Americans to help the environment … If all of the materials that could have been recycled last year were, we would have offset more than 99 million metric tons of CO2, emissions that are harmful to our climate. That equates to 505,000 rail car loads of coal, enough to stretch from Atlanta, Georgia to Fairbanks, Alaska. The impact of recycling cannot be overstated.”
